Before they were old enough to know what a nightclub was, the best pals "loved soccer and cheerleading," says a school official.

Hilton and her family move from L.A. to the family-owned Waldorf Towers in New York City. Hilton, 15, and sister Nicky, 12, begin crashing events at the hotel, getting their first taste of the local party circuit.

Less than four weeks before the debut of Hilton's FOX reality show, The Simple Life, a two-year-old sex tape featuring Hilton (and Shannen Doherty's ex-husband) Rick Salomon circulates. "I was in an intimate relationship, never thinking my foolish actions would become public," a "humiliated" Hilton tells PEOPLE. The crisis, says sister Nicky, makes her sister more spiritual: "She's taking kabbalah classes."

Thirteen million viewers tune in to the premiere of The Simple Life. Hilton and gal pal Nicole Richie's antics in rural Arkansas doubles FOX's audience in that timeslot. But, New York Times writer Dwight Gardner says the show is so painful, he "had to watch the first episode through my fingers." The following month, fashion critic Mr. Blackwell is also turned off, naming Hilton the ''Worst-Dressed Woman'' on his annual list. "Grab the blinders, here comes Paris. From cyber disgrace to red carpet chills – she's the vapid Venus of Beverly Hills!" he quips.

Where My Dawg At?

The disappearance of Hilton's pooch Tinkerbell becomes Hollywood's mystery du jour. Hilton posts reward signs all over L.A., reading, "Please help. This dog is like a child to me." Coincidentally, upon the dog's return, an unauthorized tongue-in-cheek book written from the dog's perspective – Tinkerbell Hilton Diaries: My Life Tailing Paris Hilton – is released a few weeks later.

Dancing Queen

The same year that Hilton releases a jewelry line and an autobiography, Confessions of an Heiress, she announces plans to endorse a line of Club Paris nightspots in cities including Orlando, Las Vegas, New York and Miami Beach. However, nightclub owner Fred Khalilian fires Hilton as the namesake in 2007 for missing scheduled appearances. PEOPLE reports in March 2005 that she has made $32.5 million in five years.

Hilton's Sidekick II mobile device is hacked. The perpetrator puts the names and contact information of more than 500 people – including Lindsay Lohan and Ashlee Simpson – on the Internet, forcing many of them to change their numbers.

Hilton announces the discord between her and Richie: "Nicole knows what she did, and that's all I'm going to say about it." According to a source, Richie resented being left out of Hilton's Saturday Night Live hosting gig and threw her own party, screening Hilton's sex tape.

Decked out in a skimpy black bathing suit, Hilton suggestively soaps up her black Bentley before biting into a giant hamburger in a racy commercial for West Coast fast-food chain Carl's Jr. Chomping into a sandwich bursting with barbecue sauce and jalapeno peppers, she declares for the camera, "That's hot." The eyebrow-raising ad draws formal protests from watchdog group Parents Television Council, whose research director deems it "soft-core porn."

Not exactly. Hilton breaks up with Latsis, saying, "I will always love him. He treated me like a princess the entire time." Just three days later, she finds herself another prince, cuddling up with Greek shipping heir and Mary-Kate Olsen's ex-boyfriend Stavros Niarchos III, at several L.A. nightspots.

Hilton and Niarchos announce their breakup. A week earlier, with Hilton in Austria, Niarchos spends several nights partying with Lindsay Lohan. Upon Hilton's return to L.A., she heads to nightspot Shag with Arizona Cardinals and former USC quarterback Matt Leinart, where they are spotted by Niarchos. After a 3:30 a.m. screaming match, the pair officially calls it quits. A month later, a video is released of Hilton laughing and egging on childhood friend Brandon Davis as he goes on a 10-minute insult-filled diatribe about Lohan, whom she later has a wordless dance-off with in a New York hotspot.

Several days after getting back with Niarchos, Hilton tells British GQ that she has decided to swear off sex for an entire year. "People think I sleep with everyone, but I'm not like that," she says in the September issue, adding that she's only had sex with two men in her entire life. "Kissing is all I do."

"I like, cry, when I listen to it, it's so good," Hilton tells Blender of her debut album, Paris. Critics cry too, for a different reason. USA Today gives it 1½ stars, declaring that "Hilton's colorless, wafer-thin singing reminds us there are still limits to what technology can do for the human voice."

Double Burger, Hold the Cuffs

After pulling out of In-N-Out Burger, Hilton is arrested in Hollywood on allegations of driving under the influence. Police observed Hilton driving erratically and she measured .08 on a Breathalyzer test, the minimum to warrant an arrest. "I had one margarita, starving 'cause I had not ate all day," Hilton tells Ryan Seacrest the next day. Charged with two misdemeanors, Hilton accepts a plea agreement that includes 36 months probation.

Hilton and Richie, who are set to film season five of The Simple Life in the fall, have a friendly dinner at West Hollywood restaurant Dan Tana's. The feuding friends appear to have put their differences aside, laughing through the meal and leaving the eatery smiling, hand in hand.

The site claims the materials were obtained after Hilton failed to pay rent on her storage facility and the items were auctioned off. Hilton files a lawsuit against the Web site and a judge shuts it down.

Hilton Gets Jail Time

Hilton is sentenced to 45 days in jail for violating the terms of her probation by repeatedly driving with a suspended license. She reports for jail on June 4 but is released to her home after serving three days. After one day of house arrest, she is sent back to jail to serve the remainder of her sentence.
